My goodness now I remember. Bradshaws lived close by.My Grandmother's Son and Daughter, lived at 63 ( Margaret and Reg) not at the same time, and Grandma's sister Edie (Bell) lived at 69 with their 4 daughters. I sometimes get in touch with Winnie, by phone. Probably the reason I don't use the guest book is because Bill was the conduit for me and Ann to exchange E Mail addresses, so we chatter back and forth.
Today we woke up to two feet of snow, and we had to wait until five o'clock to be bulldozed out.
I did brave snow to plod through to get ours and a few neighbors papers and mail, but it's not a smart thing to do. I was good friends with the Jervis family, and I think Beth is the only one left now. Well, It's time for bed hopefully we'll be able to drive to church tomorrow, but I guess more snow is expected. Nice to hear from you Margaret, and like you folks in Stone, I will miss Bill's web page.

My grandad loved spending time on his webpage and keeping in touch with his friends via this site. He was always searching for info on his brother - who died in 1943 - during the Nuremburg Raid. My grandad was very good on his computer and i would like to see his website preserved - if that's possible???? I am very proud of my grandad and he will be deeply missed as he was a very, very special, gentle, brave, big hearted man. R.I.P Grand.x.

Lee, I also would appreciate saving Bill's Web Page.
It was a real lifeline to those of us who are original folks of Stone, who still have so many family ties there. It was a History lesson all over again, one never to be forgotten. I hope to pass all that Bill posted, on to my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. If let go it would be a real shame,
I am sure his family also would like a remembrance
of the wonderful way their Father spent his spare time, reviving so many memories for us.

Bill will be greatly missed. His Page circled the globe from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and brought to mind so many memories to all of us. Should you, his family, find his Pittsburgh Ball cap It came directly from Pittburgh, and he was so pleased his request was granted. He knew our family well and played football with my brother, and would ask about someone who came to his mind knowing that
even this far away his query could very well be answered.
I loved his Hydrangea such a beautiful pink. Now we have added memories of his talent on the
computer. Perhaps one of you would save his web page and continue what has been a joy to so many
of us, Blessings and Comfort from Across the pond

I also worked at the Roya l Ordinance Factory in Swynnerton in 1942 until 1944.
The Factory was 4 miles sqare, and unless someone knew more about him personally, I doubt if there are any living persons who would have worked with your Father. I am in my mid 80's and worked there when I was forteen years old.
The Walton Estate Homes were built primarily to house the people who worked at Swynnerton.
I have medals that were awarded to my Father who also worked there, and the award came from St. James Palace. Whether or not there are archives available I question, since that was during the war and nothing was more important than making ammunition. Have you any idea which location or what position your Father had at that time.? How old were you when you left the Walton area.? If I search I have a list of names of others who received awards at that time.. Will check for you, but don't get any false hopes.

I was born at the "croft" nursing home Eccleshall Road,( opposite the old Kwiksave) 3/10? Feb1943
Have any of your readers got memories of my father/mother(Gladys) or of the matron at the "Croft"(which I am told was a bit of a battleaxe)...there are many pieces to my jigsaw but every little helps

Christmas Crackers - posted by Brandy on Sat 07 Nov
A Cheap Idea, get a head start on
Christmas trims. Crackers were a British tradition, made by the Tom Smith Company.
Save the cardboard toilet tissue rolls.
Cut 6 pieces of Christmas paper, or whatever you have, into 37cm x 17cm pieces use pinking shears to cut the short edges. Secure the tube with double sided sticky tape to one of the long ends of the of the paper, carefully roll the paper around the tube tightly. Carefully tie 50cm ribbon or wool around one end, tying in a bow or knot. In the other end put a paper hat, a balloon, mini puzzle , a hair clip, little plastic cars, or "whatever". Tie that end same as the other, and decorate with stickers , tassells, seals ,coloured pens or sticker stars. If you can't find the "snap strip", so what. They are great party conversations. Be Creative

Ferrie Family, Stone - posted by Bridget Amphlett on Fri 09 Oct
I am researching the family of my Gt. Grandmother Elizabeth Lyons who married Ralph Ferrie, an Italian. 1899-1903 they lived in Abbey Street, Stone, from 1904 they lived 9 Lichfield Road, Stone.

They had 5 sons, Albert Edward, Ernest Edward, George Frederick (known as Frederick), Charles Henry & Arthur John (died in 1924). I recently visited Stone cemetery and found the graves of Albert Edward & his wife Gladys Althea and their daughter Gladys Elizabeth and that of Ernest Edward & his wife Alice Maud and two of their daughters, Aline Nancie & Margaret Mary. I hope to return early next year to see if I can find any more.

Ralph Ferrie was a Greengrocer in Lichfield Road , and some of his sons were also Greengrocers in Stone. I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Ralph and Elizabeth and also a copy of Elizabeth's death certificate, she died in 1925 (Ralph died in 1942), but would also love some photo's of Ralph and Elizabeth, their family, or their Greengrocers Shop. Does anyone know if there are any, or of someone from the Ferrie family who may some?

Devall family + Meakin Avenue - posted by Marie Norfield on Sun 04 Oct
I'm doing some research into the early life of my father, Alan Devall, who sadly died at only age 33 in 1963. Alan lived with parents Clarence and Raymonde and brothers Peely, Clarence and Andre, in Meakin Avenue before the war. I would be very grateful for any information about the location and to hear from any members of the Devall family (there may be cousins of the boys as father Clarence was one of 6 children) who may have memories, or heard of memories of the family, from around 1935 onwards.

The bus was an old Guy and in the winter with the open back door had very little heat The condencation upstairs would drip Brown from the roof of the bus a mixture of warm breath and old Bill Simpson and Toddy Hamner's park drive smoke. I married Mavis hissey from Ivy mill on the longton road and we moved away in 1966 when I was made redudundant we still come back to visit from time to time and each time notice further change to the place when we new it well

That was my middle name. The piano was my first love from a very young age, even with arthritic hands I still play quite a bit. My better half was never a dancer, but every once in a while at weddings and parties I get to " trip the light fantastic". Do you remember that saying? I would no doubt enjoy Trentham Gardens. The last time I did dance was with my brother Ray at their club at Rugeley. I have so many hobbies and stay so busy, I guess I can say "Been there, Done that" Time for tea right now I hear the dishes rattling. stay well

I forgot to reply to the beautiful pictures of your Hydrangeas. My Son had his home landscaped again in the Spring and Kushners planted 3 pink hydrangeas around one corner, and they bloomed so beautifully , but they have a way to go to get as big as yours. They have 3 huge Rhodedendrons that are being cut back over a three year period, because if you are too drastic they will die. My morning Glories are gorgeous right now, one is Fuschia and other blue and they are at least 9 feet high. It's hot so it's a job keeping everything watered. My Tomato plants are yeilding nice fruit also. My Show is on TV so I'll close Toodle pip.

Thankyou Rosemary Herbert for your response.
My Mother is no longer alive, so I cannot ask about Joan Downing. She was listed in a memory book as one of Mothers best school friends. Betty Moran came to the USA in 1945 and lost track of most of her friends. If you do obtain any information of these friends, please pass it along.
Thankyou,

 Regina, Hope all is well.

Adding images is not the only advantage to the new features. If you regsiter and then login before you post, then all your messages can be grouped together and other members can reply directly to them. You can also add your email address.

You can upload your pictures straight from a digital camera.

I'll do some instructions now to explain things a bit more, but do give it a go as I built it with you guys in mind !

All the best,

By the way did you receive the picture of my brood? I know Steve and Bert did, but the rest of you never replied, I thought it was in good "British Taste" to reply. Anyway how is everybody?

Alan, How did you find it?

I think William had a go but it didn't work out.

Its still in development so any feedback would be great.

I'll work on it this afternoon and then really give it a push.

Its really just the same as the guestbook with a few added features - mainly upload images, so please have a try.

All the best,

Isn't it strange, that when people are elected to Office, their promises are all above board, but when they get there, they take a real dive. "Way to go William", your message is appropriate for the U.S also. Folks, it enforces the facts that the voters should take the time to do a thorough background check before elected and follow up afterwards.

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asks for his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I am doing some community service this week.' The florist is pleased and leaves the shop.

When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a 'Thank You' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a policeman comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The policeman is happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'Thank You' card and a box of a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again says, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The professor is very happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'Thank You' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.'

Then his Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The MP is very pleased and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the Members of Parliament.

Vote carefully this year.

How nice to get away for a while, I never saw much of the East Coast, we always went to Wales.
Maybe the first of next week I will be able to see, but right now it's a nuisance, I have Dollar Store lense, just to be able to read when neccessary, but I can't do much of that because they make my eyes tired and they run like Niagra Falls. I tried to pass my E Mail along to Lee, but he did not receive it , so I asked for instructions again, but have not heard so far. Not much new going on at present, except I found a nice quilt today, so my daughter happened to stop by and she was busy re-arranging things. I gave Patrick a photo to scan and pass along to William, so maybe he'll get around to it also. He was here for a few minutes helping Grandpa set up a new flat screen monitor, and it really makes a difference. Time to get back into the swing of things, but I am hoping now to have a little more time to read. Thanks for your message.

Hello to you both, its' been a while. Do hope you are both well, and keeping busy. Last Saturday I had an impromtu graduation party for my Grandson, I kept it for just family and we had a good visit, as well as eats, pictures, and hugs for those we had not seen in a while. On the 14th of June we will see everyone again as we travel to Canfield Ohio for yet another graduation party as a nephew and his family will be coming from North Carolina since most of us in Western Pa are getting on in years and do not travel very far afield, so it is an ideal place to meet. Whether the girls come from California and Michigan remains to be seen, but we try to connect at some point during the year. I do have a picture to send to Bill as we celebrated our 62nd anniversary with just my daughters side of the family. My little flower garden was doing so well, and I went out one morning to water and there was nothing left.
The Rabbits must have had a feast, but that's OK, we enjoy seeing them prance around the fence row across the road. I think it's early enough that I can replant or re-seed. My new glasses are a problem, the technician made a mistake on the prescription, so they had to re-order, and should be here any time now. If Lee wants to re address the changing of E mails, please repeat the instructions.

I know people from all over the world read this page. So for those of you who live abroad please be assured that the people of Stone will not put up with the dishonest behaviour of our M P Bill the leech- parasite Cash!

He will be marching in the civic parade on Sunday along side hard working town Councillors who give of their time entirely free.

He will begin his march from the very beautiful Stonefield Park 10 a.m., a park that is tended by hard working honest people who survive on a very low wage.

If he has a shred of decency he will not show his face, but if he DID have any decency he wouldn't have done what he's done. Does he have no morals?

We pay his wages but no more, I hope he doesn't mind queueing because it's a long wait in the dole queue!

Make him pay it all back!

My Dear, It's like the old farmer said, "You can take the farmer off the farm, but you can't take the farmer out of him" You don't like, you don't read"
It's been over 62 years since I left my homeland and my hometown of Stone, but I must tell you I have not forgotten either one of them. Folks here are delighted to hear about my life in England, and they can tell I soon as I speak where I came from, and how they enjoy British scones and treats. There's a poem that says, " When I die , think only this of me, that there's some corner of a Foreign Land that is FOREVER ENGLAND. If a person does not care to read what friends of this page write, all you have to do is move on. As for me it brings back memories and I can share what some of the younger generation never heard about. I am also happy to make the aquaintance of folks back there who possibly have a tie to STONE. This page means a lot to me, and I do wish that we could exchange E Mail addresses without the repercussions it would bring. I read the Stone Gazette, you should try it also, and how I delight at all the different activities that are written about, and it also gives me an opportunity to pass some of these projects along. Thanks Lee and William I will see if I can do as you suggest. Ann , thanks, I am fine. My little brother always answered "Hello Honey" when I called him And I am am teaching folks here to say "Toodle Pip" when I leave them. This is just a spark of british wit and we all love it. When the management here needs to send someone to my home for any reason, they say, take this to the Brit. Get a sense of Humor., not spelt wrong it's how it's spelt in the USA. "I Love Stone"

Thanks to Richard I was able to get in touch with a member of the Ferrie family who in turn gave me the telephone number of a Grand-daughter, now aged 92, of my Gt. Grandmother Elizabeth Ferrie nee Lyons. This lady was able to confim that this was indeed my Gt. Grandmother and gave me other information about the family. I have now been able to use this on my family tree. My only regret is that I cannot tell my mother or her siblings, or my Grandmother, who was Elizabeth's daughter (she was fostered with another family), about their other family as they have all now passed away.

Has anybody noticed the unbelievable price hike on the new menus at the Crown Hotel in Stone. What is the management thinking, we are in a recession and if you want the general public in Stone to support your business through these hard times then DONT RIP US OFF. I have also noticed from the advertisment in the Stone Gazette that you are the only business that isnt supporting or contributing to the Stone Festival this year you should be ashamed of yourselves. so come on Stone residents lets all stick together and boycote the Crown Hotel, all they are interested in is feathering there own nest.

Edwardian poetry - posted by Regina on Wed 06 May
Ann, you won't believe it but I had to throw my glasses away, they were too mutilated to be of any use, however, I was going through a drawer and I found a pair from long--------ago, and though not perfect, they will see me through until I get new ones. The poetry book sounds interesting, in fact I write poetry, and when John Glenn went up in the shuttle again they were asking for folks to write something about him or his wife. I did, and the following Christmas Eve I received word that it was going to be published in a book to honour him, and It may very well be available at Cape Canaveral Gift Shop in Florida. I write mostly uplifting poems, and for Christmas this year since we no longer exchange gifts, I'm copying each one on printmaster with the corresponding theme, for each of my brood and having it spiral bound. they really have no idea just what I have written over time, but my daughter is aware, because I wrote some suitable things for different displays we do in the foyer of the church. I've retired frm that now but still keep my hand in. I'm ready for a piece of apple pie and coffee, but I don't hear any noise from the kitchen just yet. Thanks for your nice remarks and I will seek a way to contact you personally. Bill are you there, have any ideas for me?

Ann, It is done, and what a difference. My follow up was yesterday at 740 am. I am fine. I feel a bit scratchy but drops for a month should make a difference. Next Friday I will have a vision test for new glasses, but I'm told the correction will be very minor. I need the glasses anyway, I've sat on the others three times in a row, all because I set them down on floral fabric with a black background.
This time I better learn my lesson, it's an expensive one. Is there a really nice Book (magazine) still around called "This England". I am lending my copies to someone who sometime may take a trip to our beautiful Island. If so I may ? see if I could tag along on the flight. I would so like to see those of my immediate famiy who are still in various areas of my homeland. Trust you are well , keep in touch.

Ferrie Family - posted by Bridget Amphlett on Sat 11 Apr
I am trying to trace any of the above family from Stone. I have recently found out through family research that my Gt. Grandmother, Elizabeth Lyons born C1864 Stafford married an Italian named Ralph (Rafael) Ferrie at the Dominican Church, Margaret St. Stone in 1925. Elizabeth died in 1925 in Stone.

They had sons Abert Edward Ferrie Lyons, known as Albert E. Ferrie born 1894, Ernest E. Lyons, known as Ernest Edward Ferrie born 11.12.1896, George Frederick Ferrie, known as Frederick. born 26.04.1899, Charles Henry Ferrie born 29.05.1901 and Arthur John Ferrie born 15.06.1903.

My family knew nothing about Elizabeth Lyons as my Grandmother Kate Lyons was fostered by a family in Penkridge, for the past four years I have been trying to trace Elizabeth after 1894 and only found that she had a family and had been living in Stone two days ago. I've found that at least two of the sons were fruiterers and greengrocers in Stone.

I would be grateful for any information.

The answers to all of your questions is NO!!!!!
Far too many interuptions, some out of my control others of my own making. Spring broke really early for us, so when the sun shines you can see alll the cobwebs, fingerprints and dust. I've tackled everything in stages and except for a pile of sewing. I think now I can make some headway. The sewing machine was not sewing properly so a repair man came and took it away and brought it back on Monday. I made an awful mistake on printmaster on the computer, but luckily I have a friend who walked me through to correct it. However, my husband had someone come and take the ham radio tower, and he transferred the ham "stuff" to the other computer, and we stayed up all night waiting for the thing to clear. It didn't until I made another call and I was walked through the rest of the program so that I was able once again to enjoy printmaster. It's been raining for a few days but it has not been cold. The PARTY was cancelled for Easter Sunday, both Nick and his Mother are Nurses, and it's unlikely that they will get Easter Sunday off, so tentively it's scheduled for April 18th which should be their weekend off. The cooking part doesn't bother me a bit, and my Carole will do any decorating, so it's no big deal whenever the bunch can get together. Well it's tea time so I'll wish you well and talk again later.

Have not had the surgery yet, our weather has been very troubling transportation wise, and shots are needed three days before and after, so I need access to the person who is going to do this because they will have a hard time getting near my eyes, I am a real nuisance. I think the meanest of the weather is over so now I can think about it more seriously. When I get there I will check oin the Jacket. Nothing much going on yet, other than baking and sharing, but I am anxious to plant some flower seeds for later on. I have been sewing and my latest job has been to recover two couch covers for my daughter. There are a lot of final sales going on, and I picked up 2 long sleeved jerserys for son and grandson. $3. dollars each. We call that "dirt cheap" We have three birthdays in the next week, so I guess that means birthday cakes. Trust you are fine

Parking charges in Stone. - posted by John Rowe on Mon 09 Mar
Thanks for your response Clulch (assumed name??) what you are saying is, its not the responsibility of your local town councilors to lobby the borough even in matters of self preservation, we have all been aware over the years that Stone is classed as second cousins to Stafford Borough, now I know why!!!!!!

Parking Charges in Stone - posted by Pauline on Mon 09 Mar
 OK Ok Clutch....
Mr Rowe was only pointing out a really fabulous idea.
And that it had worked in other towns.
I myself go to Nantwich, and have noticed a considerable amount of many more shoppers there, since they have stopped the parking charges.
I actually know a few of the local traders there and they have said how much better they are doing.
And whether it is Stone Town Councillors or Stafford....
It doesn't matter.... I thought Stone Town Council were there to help the Town in whatever way they can ????

Parking Charges in Stone - posted by Clutch on Mon 09 Mar
Mr Rowe asks Stone Town Councillors to do something positive and remove the parking charges in Stone. Alas Mr Rowe the charges are imposed by Stafford Borough Council and the Town Council have no control over them at all.

I am not a Town Councillor, but I do know several of them, and I can see that they are working very hard to attract people and events to our Town, with some success it has to be said.

Yes there was a Chemist Shop on the High Street in Stone. It was named Jacks Chemist Shop. I'm not sure if it was below or above the entrance to Joules, which now I believe is an Arcade. I can probably give you more info after I make a phone to someone who would know. If you're interested, reply and I will see what I else I can find out.

Put some positive effort it Stone Council - posted by John Rowe on Sun 08 Mar
Stone town councilors should put some effort into saving our Town and High Street in this global recession like many others Town councils have done throughout the rest of the country, what they are doing is to give FREE parking to help encourage shoppers to visit the inner towns, instead of the out of town shopping malls where they have FREE unlimited parking.
I have visited many that have done this with a resounding success story, one of them being Nantwich, its now become extremely difficult to get parked in their many car parks dotted around the town, and everywhere is buzzing with shoppers, and if our Stone Town counselors would make an effort to view the findings of this exercise, they would get a very positive feedback from it.
In these extreme times we need extrema action, so, Stone councilors lets see what you are made of and give us some ACTION!!!!!!

Stone 1938. Dorothy Williams, QARANC was the younger sister of 'Granny Norbury' of Norburys, High Street Stone. Dorothy Williams had served in the 'Great War' WW1, nursing Australian soldiers in England. In 1938 Dorothy Williams joined up again and was later sent to North Africa, again nursing Australian and British soldiers at the desert hospital at Qassasin. On leave in Cairo, Dorothy was suspected of being a German spy and questioned by the Miliary Police (as Dorothy served in the 'First War' she still wore the GRV badge not the new GRV1 badge ) anyway they decided not to shoot her ! After the war Dorothy Williams came to Stone and lived with her sister 'over the shop' at Norburys, High Street Stone. Dorothy often marched in Stone on 11th November still waring her GRV badge and Africa Star, we said she had more medals than Monty. This comes to you from sunny Melbourne, Australia, the bushfires are now under control after sone rain this week but we had 4.6 eathquake a couple of days ago, no damage but the earth certainly moved that night !

Used to live in stone - posted by maz on Thu 05 Mar
Helllllo to all my old friends in Stone... I left Alleynes in 79. We used to live in Whitemill lane and Manor Rise..
I left Stone just a few years ago, I used to love it there, but its grown so much and lost its friendly small town feel..
I was shocked after leaving as a teenager for work and coming back as an adult to see the changes. I didn't stay long but moved away again. They say you can never go back, what a shame they are right...

Hehe I remember when the now walk bridge over the river was the main road... how much fun having to wait to get over it... Whatever happened to the good old navy club!!!!!... Morrisons is just not as useful is it...
Its nice to pop back and see my friends, its still a nice place, but not as beautiful as it used to be, so much building has gone on, the character has left!

There is someone in Stone who does remember George with his Straw Boater, and I know he was born the same year as you. He went to Alleynes, played cricket and football, was a pharmacist at Boots Chemist on the main street. He went in to Service in the Medical Corps. He is my Brother and my younger brother who you may know also passed away last July. He also was in to football. My phone needed charged so I could not finish my conversation, but will call again, perhaps tomorrow to see what if any more info. he remembers. I bet you know me also, although I was born in 1928.
We stopped for tea at Norbury's on one of our family trips back to Stone. That area of the town has changed a lot. Will check on the building you mentioned. Sorry about the fires there, we are having extremely cold weather in this part of PA which is about 60 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, but it is about to break now with more seasonal temperatures starting tomorrow. I'm suprised how many folks from Stone migrated to Australia My counsin from Kent moved there, but she passed away a few years ago. I think I would like a trip there, but the long flight does not thrill me. Toodle pip from PA/ USA

I have just seen Joy Dames item on John & Ann Norbury,1881, confectionary shop and son George. George Norbury who married my grandmother (Percy Moss's widow ). I was born in 'Market Square' Stone in the 1930s. On VEDay we all went up to 'The Rec' to see the bonfire. In the 1950s I lived with 'Granny Norbury' at 'The Shop' with her sister Doll. On 11th November 'Doll' would march with her medals from both wars, she had 'The Africa Star' for service in North Africa. In the 1930 and before she was married my mother Olga Kent worked at 'The Crown'. After George Norbury died , mothers brother,John Kent, bought the 'Norbury' business. This comes to you from sunny Australia, bit too sunny now as we have 12 major bushfires on going and it was 48c last week!. George Norbury was often seen about Stone in his 'boater' straw hat. I see there is a 'Norbury Court' in Stone but can not is if the old 'Sherwood House' built in 1700 is still on High Street. Is it still there? "Born In Stone".

Crown hotel - posted by Neil on Fri 20 Feb
We stayed 2 nights in this hotel as we were attending my sons wedding.I found the restaurant staff very friendly and accomodating but not enough staff on duty at any one time, making service slow and poor. The room we stayed in looked very tired and in need of a revamp. The tv wasnt worth watching as you couldnt see the picture.
At the wedding meal a few problems arose which included no heating being on in the ballroom and no staff on the bar, we approached the General Manager who became very abrasive and unapproachable, he wasnt prepared to even offer an apology. This did put a very unhappy atmosphere to which should of been a joyous occasion.
The attitude of the General Manager did ruin my sons wedding and i can assure anybody that i would not be holding another family event here.
My advise to the owner of the Crown Hotel is to get yourself a General Manager who has some idea of the skills neaded for good customer care.

Valentines' Day 2009 - posted by Regina on Sun 15 Feb
I don't recall Valentine's Day when I was a child in the UK, but in the US when I worked in the School System, each child had a little box on their desks. Each Parent bought a "pack" of little Valentine Cards all different but with the same message. "Be My Valentine" One desk, one box, the Love of a child. As we've grown older, society has taught us to narrow our offerings of affection.
Eventually we have narowed our list to only one person. Now if you send a Valentine it has to be Candy, Jewelry, and flowers.. Think how many people, elderly, infirm and alone never hear the word that Valentine's Day should impart. I am counting now how many people have played a role in my Life, so I am sending a Valentine for each one of you. Male, Female, Single or married They all say the same thing, I appreciate the contribution you have made to each other. I wish you all a "Happy Valentine's Day"

Christmas Clean Up - posted by jill hood on Thu 01 Jan
December 13th was a freezing cold and wet Saturday in Stone for the litter pick organised by Andy Whitehall! Everyone who met in the market square was greeted by the smiling faces of 30 youngsters who belong to the "Right Stuff" boxing and "The Reel Em In " fishing group. None of them complained when Andy sent groups of adult volunteers with the P.C.S.O,s and the youngsters to go off in different directions with their bin bags and cheery spirit to once again clean up Stone. The younger ones took Christmas baskets to some of the elderly residents of Stone. I'm not sure who got more out of this experience the elderly or the kids, I do know when they came back they were beaming at the reactions of those who were given a basket but it took some explaining to one of the kids that when one of the recipients cried they were'nt sad! Once again Andy and his young people worked their magic. How many youngsters do you know who would give up their Saturdays to pick litter and visit the elderly. A big thankyou to all who turned up on that really wet day especially to Andy and all his helpers who continually give up their time to keep Stone clean.

Christmas Recipe for Friends and those who remember me - posted by Regina on Sat 13 Dec
Take a bit of cheerfulness, A pinch of laughter too ,Next take a cup of thoughtfulness and stir them through and through. Add to this, tranquility, A verse of "Silent Night", When God sends His Holy Light. Gently fold in some tenderness, A handclasp or smile will do, Perhaps it could be a fond caress, Or a Rose with a drop of dew. Set aside a moment while you go For spices, herbs, a scent of pine...For Music and fun, a Candle's glow. Now mix and stir and fold again, then add some Mistletoe, A bit of Faith, and Love and then, Into the Oven your Cake must go! Where warmth and affection will combine, to make this cake come true, Garnish with happiness, Truth so fine, Enough for You and You! Cut a piece, but save some too For every day of the year, Serve with a Prayer for Peace on Earth, And a Heavenly Kingdom Near. A Blessed Chritmas to all who read this letter.

Another Charity Shop! - posted by lidia cooper cooper on Thu 11 Dec
Firstly why another charity shop or is it better than an empty shop in the High Street?

To add insult to injury why did they ask the borough mayor to open it today, why not our really hard working own mayor. Can anyone answer why our mayor was snubbed in place of her?

I for one will NOT be spending any money in there.
I give to all the charity shops in Stone except Age Concern as the Stone and district branch of Age Concern don't benefit and that's a well documented fact. Pop in to the Age Concern office in the council buildings in Station Road ifyou want to make a donation to Stone Age Concern.

Yes, my mother (Judy nee Hughes) was a guide captain. She lived in Oulton Road about 100 metres fron Jervis butchers. She had sisters Molly and Rose, and brother Jim (who had a speech impediment). She married John Emery in 1948 and now lives in Mount Crescent. She is active at bridge and plays bowls with Bill in the park.

Now, you all have me thinking. My Daughter and son are in the same age bracket as Delia's children. so I know I have the right person. Yes she did live opposite the number 60's in Victor Street. I was amazed to read on the forum that there are now speed bumps on Victor Street. Years ago the only vehicles on Victor Street were Mr Sproston the Coalman and Gordon? the milkman. Something must have changed very rapidly, the street is hardly long enough to need speed bumps. Delia do you remember when Bill Jervis used to drive the sheep along the street to take them to the cattle market. So many years ago. Bill, we did have a nice Thanksgiving. I told my Grandson to bring his digital camera but he didn't, instead he brought all kinds of Italian finger foods with different cheeses and the tiniest red peppers and olives as well as a huge tossed salad. We shared the food preparation, and my husband and Patrick, said we are not going to have so much for Christmas, one didn't know what to eat first, and there were leftovers galore. Patrick always insists I make Onion Sauce, they don't know what it is here, but we both really enjoy it. We have a mixture of foods, English and Italian, but everybody has a good appetite and they like to eat. I am the baker, and already have my orders from them for Christmas cookies and nut roll. Scones go over big also. There were twelve of us and I invited two guests, one a 90 year old gentleman who lives alone, and my neighbour Doctor Nancy Lamancusa. She retired her practice after 42 years, has a memory you can't believe, and can tell so many funny stories that have happenend over the years. My next little get together will be to have Louies three brothers and their wives for lunch, we are all getting older and need to keep in touch. I've rambled, but it's so nice to refresh old memories. Drop another line should you have the urge, too bad we can't get together over a cup of tea. Happy and safe holidays to you all.

How nice to hear from you also. It has been a while since I left a message on this page, I check once in a while but not as often as I used to. There doesn't seem to be news that I can offer a reply to. That said, we are both fine. , it was Thanksgiving day on Thursday, but my daughter in law and grandson were both working, so I am having everybody for dinner tomorrow night at 4 o'clock. There will be eleven of us, so I spent the day prepping, and tomorrow will bring it's own arrangement of things to do. We are decorated for Christmas once again, I do less and less nowadays, it's not the putting things up, but taking them down, getting everything dried and put away again that is a bug bear. I do make a lot of decoration for my home, since I used to do it in a big way for my church, but I have passed the torch to my daughter, who also loves to decorate. Our weather was very nice until this past week, but it is cold and we have seen some snow, but we will have much more before the winter is over. I bake a lot, and even though Ive had a busy day, I want to make banana- nut scones, and I want you to know, I still make Mincepies and also fill some with raspberry, lemon and apricot. They get taken around to folks, because they are typically English and they arre so appreciated. Nut roll is a big craze here and I have a Hungarian recipe, which I think is where it originated. I would love to be able to send stuff to Bert, but the postage is out of sight. My dear husband just brought me a cup of tea (the ususal thing at 9 pm), so I think I'd better wind up , and finish my baking (just for tonight). Have a wonderful holiday season, and stay well.

I came to Stone in the years 1937/8 on a school holidays, the first year I lived in a house in Alma Road, and I can vividly remember that the woman had just had a child it couild have been weeks old, the second time in 1938 I went to stay with the Railway Crossing Kepper keeper and his wife, and I can remember the name was Hudson, does anyone remember the childern coming from london to stay during those years, and maybe a photo of the place then would be nice.I was 8 at the time. In 1976, I visited Stone, and the place had not changed much, and I am sorry to say, that I arrived too late to seee the cattle market, but I did see the clearing up of the mess, which brought back happy memories because I used to help do that when I was on holiday Thank you STONE

I was born in Stone on 19 November 1970, along with my twin brother. We were both adopted in 1971 and moved to Kings Heath near Birmingham with my adopted parents. Our past is still sketchy, even after all of these years. All I know is that my Mother's name is Sandra (Jones) and she lived in Heather Drive (or Crescent?). I often wonder how she is. She must think of my and my brother every November 19th. Anyway, I feel 'connected' to Stone and wnated to say hello. Does anybody know where the hospital was in 1970 in or around Stone??

I have only just become aware of Stone Forum and picked up on your message with the name Joan Downing. Unless there was more than one Joan Downing in Stone at that time I believe that was my aunt who was the daughter of Elizabeth Downing. Joan had two sisters Gladys and Doreen and two brothers Bernard & Bill. Joan married an American named Tim and became a GI bride eventually moving to America around war time (not sure what year). I only remember Joan & Tim returning to Stone around late 50s or early 60s and never again. Not long after my grandmother received news that Joan & Tim had died in mysterious circumstances but I cannot remember the outcome as I was too young at the time. I do believe they had children. If your mother is still around can she tell me anything about aunt Joan as I never really knew her.

Keeping Safe - posted by Regina on Tue 16 Sep
Margaret, it just dawned on me that you hoped I was safe. I gather it was because of the horrible Hurricane down South. America is big, 3.500 miles east to west, and somewhere around that north and south. We are on the border of Ohio and Pennslyvania, 60 miles from Pittsburgh. Last night we got the tail end of the storm, I can tell you I have never known such wind even though we must be about 15.000 miles north. We didn't get the rain, but it took it's toll on my little garden, and the maintenance people were out this morning picking up the debris, since we face a row of tall trees, and there were branches and whatever else, strewn across the road. Today it's real nice in the 70's and supposed to stay that way this week. Thanks for your note.

Congratulations to my Hometown of Stone Staffs .---Again. It always was a pretty town, and the surroundings were beautiful. I am grateful that some of the beauty spots were given to the National Trust. So much of the wooded areas towards the West of here are being destroyed for nothing more than Malls. They build one, vacate it and build again further up the road. Terrible waste of Space and money. They need to concentrate on just how much destroying the wooded areas, is hampering the global warming. You can tell I am born and bred English, I love Gardens, flowers, trees and veggies and my freezer is full of home grown goodies. It reminds me of the alloments that used to be on Mount road, where my Grandad had a garden, beside a beautiful flowers garden behind his house on Field Terrace. Lovely memories.

Bill, we are getting the tail end of the monstrous storm that hit the gulf coast. I have never seen winds like this. The row of trees across from us looks as though they will fall out of the ground any minute. We haven't had the rain yet, but we are still in a Severe Storm Warning until Midnight. I play it safe and get all the battery operated lights spread around the house, because it is possible the electric may go off. It sounds like the roar of a train outside.

Bill, some of us wonder here about the lavish style of living and the really tremendous size homes that are built.. There's quite an uproar about the price of gasoline, because, this country is huge, and folks have these gas guzzler vehicles, and have to drive 6o miles and more to work and then come back again. What the US does definately affects the global economy. Our next President has a monumental job ahead just to revive even the sentiment that exists. Glad to know you are still around

Politics - posted by William 1 on Sat 30 Aug
Yes Regina I follower the campaigns for President of America and I guess a lot more people do because what they do effects this country.
I don't know how many people are out of work but no one is starving and people ride around in motor cars and go abroard for there holidays even if they are on benifits. HOW DO WE DO IT?.

Politics - posted by Regina on Sat 30 Aug
Has anyone showed even a slight interest in the campaigns for President here in the US.? I pay attention to British politcs, and I'm sorry to hear of Margaret Thatchers Illness. I don't know if it's a taboo subject, but shared thoughts are interesting, as long as they are not being vicious. Someone mentioned there are 3 million homes in the UK in which no one works. It seems like an awful figure in such a small country.

My parents ran the shop until mum passed away in 1995, dad carried on until September 1996 when due to failing health he had to close down. Dad passed away in 1998. Search for a friend - posted by Chia-hao Chang on Tue 24 Jun
Greetings all. I met a little girl named Penelope Miller in Hong Kong almost 50 years ago. She wrote me a Christmas greeting in 1970, which mentioned that she had moved back to Walton, Stone. After that I had been moving from place to place and lost contact with her. Incidentally I found this Blog site and wonder if anyone in Stone knows Penelope and has any recent information about her?

I returned your E Mail, but it was rejected immediately at the address posted. It's better you disguise your address in some way rather than post it on the internet. Perhaps William can advise you.

I knew Betty, and I also knew she was living in Wales. I can probably furnish you with a lot of information about the Bate side of the family, and following on to my generation and beyond. I am interested to learn more.

 Emma,

As I haven't had a response, I assume you didn't get my email.I knew your father when I lived In Walton between 1945 and 1957 both from St. Michael,s which I attended and from the Stone 5th Walton Cubs and Scouts of which I was a member.

I also remember Walton Grange and the Barrett Greens. They had an old indoor swimming pool there which they agreed the scouts could use provided they cleaned it up, which we did. Since leaving Stone in 1957 I have moved around a bit but have spent the last 30 odd years in Cheshire which is not too far from Stone, so we go there sometimes on a nostalgia trip. Sorry to see that St Michael's is no longer a school and Walton Grange has gone.
I hope you and your father enjoy your visit to Stone.

Best regards,

John

William, I had a chat with my Grandson earlier about the pictures I sent over, he says he hasn't had time. No doubt he will take time now that I gave him a boost. Anyway someone was asking about a picture of the Cattle Market. I do not have one, but I found one in a book of England, and so I am forwarding it . It may serve as a reminder of what many cattle markets looked like. The picture of the group has to be at least 70 years old. It is not in the best condition, but copied it was still viewable.

hi from new zealand.Great site, great find.My grandfather,Charles Hassall was born in 1880,at 7 Wise st Stone. He came to NZ in 1906 and my grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Cope born in Longton 1879 arrived in NZ a year later and married soon after. Grandads parents were William Hassall, died aged 46ys. His wife Jane (nee Davis) remarried Herbert Brandrick. They had a son born in 1897 and was told she went out to buy a loaf of bread in the fog and was knocked down by a buggy and was killed. I do not have a date but believe she is buried in Stone.Has anybody heard this story. Maybe someone is related.

Rowan Stump - posted by Emma Stump on Sun 01 Jun
 Hi everyone!

Just a message to ask whether anyone on here remembers my father Rowan Stump (b. 1939) who lived in Walton up until about 1952 and went to St Michael's School, or his parents, Fred (who worked at Swinnertons) and Dorothy (or Beck as she was commonly called) who worked at Trent House Hospital?

Dad (who isn't computer-literate, sadly) and I are planning a trip to Stone later this year and I came across this site and thought it would be interesting to see if anyone remembered him/his parents. He certainly remembers Walton Grange and the Barrett-Green family mentioned elsewhere here.

Dad was a member of the local Cubs/Scouts and we have a picture of him being made a Sixer - also a picture of him and a hallful of kids at a party/gathering (in the Community Centre?). And I don't know if anyone remembers his performance as King Herod at St Michael's one year, delivering the memorable (unscripted) line "I'll bash you, Baby Jesus!"

Thanks in anticipation of your responses!

The Croft - posted by Heather Holley on Sun 01 Jun
This is my first visit to this site. I lived in Eccleshall Road (next to Lamb Inn) from 1952 - 1963. My dad, Arthur Johnson had a milk retail business and owned the cottage opposite our house. Behing this cottage a new doctor's surgery was built. My aunt and uncle (surname Buxton) lived at no 30 and almost opposite them was "The Croft", at that time owned by Mr & Mrs Ball. I cannot remember it being a Nursing/Maternity home. I was born in Peacehaven at Knennal and the owner I believe to be a Nurse Chattin.
Another Forum item was about Emmy and Katy Smith who had a shop in or near Victor Street. They retired to near Eastbourne and lived in the same street and my auntie Tizzie (Wright nee Dawson). When I stayed with her as a child I often visited Emmy and Katy Smith.
I now live in Turkey and would be keen to contact anyone who remembers me or my family.

Well, I need to make another phone call to see what happened. I also have to find other pictures, but I am up to my neck with this Afternoon tea party on June 14th. Wish I could share some of the cookies (sweets) and the scones. I found a great book at our Library with recipes from posh hotels in England and here in the US, so I have a great selection to choose from. Next will be "cherry and white chocolate" sounds good to me. will advise later about the pictures
