The Croft - posted by Regina on Fri 16 May
Anona, There was a house across the road from the Garage at Walton on the Eccleshall Road. I am under the impression the house was torn down and a another building was erected which is a Doctor's Office. This new Houce has been given the name :"The Croft". Incidental? I don't know.

Heeley - posted by Regina on Fri 16 May
William, Joe Reader was raised by My Grandmother since his mother died at birth. He wanted to go into the Submarines in WWII but the Bell Girls, Molly and Jean talked him out of it, so he went into the navy. He was one of only 5 Survivors when their ship was torpedoed in the Northern Sea Of Murmansk. He was married to Rena who died about a year ago, and lives on the outskirts of Stafford. I talk to him occasionally, he's as old as Louie. I'm not sure whether Betty and Edna Reader were sisters- maybe cousins, but I do know he had a brother. I need my Grandson to a little job for me so while he's here I will see what he can do with the pictures. The Heeley you refer to could be either Kenneth or or Jack, they lived on Old Road, Their Father was Frank. Jack was killed in a motorbike accident while still young, Kenny may still be alive he had a number of children. I have a geaneolgy chart , perhaps their's more information on that. Here's to the new photo page.

William, I have a picture of my Brother Raymond with a group of men who worked for Bagnalls, when they finished a huge Steam Engine which was transported to Tanganyika, South Africa. They have changed the name to something else now but I wonder if you would care for a copy? I also have My Granparents sitting on the center steps of Stonefield park when they were quite old. Would be nice to share all the pictures I've saved over the years with those who remain of our generation in Stone

Families - posted by Regina on Tue 13 May
William, hope your Internet problem is resolved soon. There was a question about who lived at 63 Victor Street in time past. Ethel and Reg Heeley, son of my Grandparents who lived at 7 Field Terrace, lived there, then Arthur and Sally Hill, My Grandmother's Sister (he was the signal man at the Whitebridge Lane crossing,) then Margaret and Tom Smith (Daughter of Anne and Harold Heeley) lived there for a while and then moved to Trentham. I am still interested in the " Plot" and if anyone ever walks through there anymore.

I feel sure Im right in thinking , there was a Maternity Home in Ecceshall Rd Walton at the time mentioned.which is still there .Its been a private house for years Cant think of lady's name who was the midwife (I was Very Young At The Time Ha! Ha!)

The Croft - posted by Regina on Mon 12 May
Anona, I can only think of asking at the Stone Library for information you request. Other than that, there maybe an older lady who may have some knowledge about it. If you are not from Stone at present, put your request before William on this page if he has any recollection of the place you are interested in he would probably try to find out for you.

'The Croft' birthplace - posted by anona matthews on Sat 10 May
Thank you for your information Regina but on looking at my birth certificate again, it definitely states 'The Croft ' as being in Walton Stone. So do you think the home you mentioned may be too far away from that address ? Maybe the building no longer exists or has been renamed. Not sure how to progress really. Anyone any ideas?

The Plot - posted by Regina on Fri 09 May
Yesterday I was picking violets out of a yard near here, and thinking back , I wonder if people still go for walks over the plot and pick the buttercups and daises? I know the Bluebell Woods are gone, Shame, it was filled with bluebells and marsh marigolds, You could sit on a fallen tree and hear the birds and spend an hour just listening. Simple entertainment, yet so long remembered. My Uncle Arthur was the person who looked after the Plot, and he lived at the Crossing on the Whitehill Lane, and guided all the trains on the right tracks.

"The Croft" - posted by Regina on Fri 09 May
It's possible "The Croft" was the name of a home. Their were two midwives named Nurse Street and Nurse Lowndes, who would be called to deliver infants. There was a large home on the longton Road, called "Knenhall", the K silent. The Lady of the home used it as sort of a maternity hospital.

Birthplace - posted by anona matthews on Thu 08 May
I was born in Stone in 1949. On my birth certificate the actual place of birth was recorded as 'The Croft' Walton Stone. I believe it was a maternity home as my mother told me that the midwife there influenced her in the choice of my name !! I would love to know where that building is now.

Schools - posted by Regina on Thu 08 May
Thank you Elizabeth, I am familiar with your information. I do recall a school that possibly was taken over by the Civil Defence in WWII. I remember ny Mother carrying me to school because it had snowed. Very unusual. That's where I learned to dislike warm milk. I left the UK in 1947, At Christ Church School. Mr. Capps was one of the Teachers, along with Miss Lovelock, who I locked horns with over the pronunciation of my name. I learned to knit and to hem a white hankie with red thread, so that we could see what we were doing. The teachers name escapes me at the moment but she was a Mrs. and I would say in the second grade. She was a sweet lady. At Stone Senior School Miss Heatherington taught sewing and gym and I have carried what I learned in that class through my whole life.. Mr. Barker Smith was a wonderful head Master, In my memory book I have his Obit. Thanks for the contact.

Schools - posted by Elizabeth on Wed 07 May
Hello Regina. I can't remember any schools other than the 2 Primary Schools Christ Church and St Michael's plus the Catholic School St Dominics and Miss Bellis's near the station and the 2 secondary schools - the Secondary Modern in Old Road which is now a Middle School and Alleyne's - plus St Dominics Convent. There used to be a shop years ago I know at no 1 Alexandra Street as my Grandmother used to keep it but that was very many years ago not later than early 1930s. My Mother told me that they sold bundles of firewood and when she was small she very kindly went round one day and left bundles on the doorsteps of the houses in the road. I don't remember there still being a shop there though in the fifties but maybe I've forgotten.

The Gullet - posted by Regina on Tue 06 May
William, So funny that you should remind me of that little passage way between Old and Oulton Roads. The Vine Inn is in that area and we knew the owner at that time as "Uncle Vic" I was never in a pub, until I came back on our 25th anniversary, and we met with The Bell Family at the Talbot. The Sweet Shop as I remember was at the top of Albert Street, and was a post office then. Grandad Heeley gave us a penny every Saturday and that is where we would go for candy. A penny wouldn't buy even that anymore. What's new with you?

Smiths Grocery - posted by Regina on Tue 06 May
Thank you Elizabeth for your information about the little shop on Victor Street. We made many trips there for apples and potatoes. How nice that you are related. These are wonderful memories.
Was there another little shop on the corner of Alexander Street, I think they sold clothing. At the top of Alexander Street by Arthur Street is the building still there that was a school. That is where I first attended school, and I haven't forgotten that the teacher warmed our milk. I refused it then, and I still do. Funny what we remember.

Regina, Lillian Pickering referred to his not the one you are thinking about, that Lillian Pickering was Joe Pickering the undertakers daughter.
The Lillian Pickering referred to was much older she lived in Oulton Rd.next to the gullet the pathway between Oulton Rd.and Old Rd.opposite Lotus shoe factory that was.
I don't Know of a Smiths shop in Victors St are you thinking of Frank Smiths shop? a sweet shop in Arthur's St.which we children often referred to as May Roses, moved to Victoria St.and became a sub post office

Pickering - posted by Regina on Mon 05 May
William and Margaret, The name of Lillian Pickering is well remembered. However, is it the same Lil Pickering that lived in the house between Field Terrace and Victor Street? They had a little shop half way up Albert Street. Mrs. Shutt , who I think was Lillian's Aunt lived with her and also ran the shop. If Norman Plant worked at Joules, it was after I left England. I remember Knights shop, and I also worked at Joules, but do not recognise the name while I worked there. Yes, I do remember the Bennett boys, and Eric Warrilow.. It interest me to know what became of Smith's Shop in the middle of Victor Street.

Margaret, I read with interest your explanation of the house numbers on Victor Street being omitted. You mention "Ivor" Plant wasn't his name "Ivan" I don't recall Norman Plant working at Joules. I do remember John Smith working there in the 40's. Would you know what department Norman worked in, and is John Smith still alive? there's a picture of a young Ivan on Bill's page of the street party after World War II . John Smith had a younger brother also.

Regards to anyone in Stone that remembers me. Bazza.

I have seen Victor Street mentioned quite often here. My grandmother's adopted brother Charles Plant (father of Norman and Ivan) was born 9th October 1898 at 37 Victor Street, Stone. His mother was Ann Plant, dressmaker, address also 37 Victor Street, no father on the birth certificate. On both the 1891 and 1901 censuses this house number is missing (nothing between 29 and 39). Does anyone know why?

I received word that John Lloyd (Albert Atreet)passed away. David Jones lived a few doors further up. My Grandparents used to live at 7 Field Terrace, and I used to go to the doctor's office for the Wilshaws who lived at number 9. They had a parrot for years they called Polly. These messages are reviving spelling tests, except that over here, some words leave out the U, so it may appear that my spelling is incorrect, but "when in Rome you have to do what the romans do", that's a popular way of giving an excuse. Stella is still in town I think, she lived on Field Terrace. Would love to see someone take an interest here to plan a beautiful Park like Stonefield. We have copied the hanging baskets on poles along the main street, but downtown New Castle is no where as busy as it used to be. All our shops now have moved out to the suburbs and the Malls. There' not even a fabric store in town which cramps my style a lot. I love to sew, have done so since I was a kid at Stone Senior School. Enough already.

I am amazed when I read about and look through this web site of the number of resaurants in town nowadays. When I was home in 1972 with my family, the only eating places we found were Norburys at the bottom end of town and the "Whimpy Bar". We had the best time at the "Whimpy Bar" , they went overboard fussing over us, and we were seated in the back on the lawn. However, the British in me still reigns and I am doing a fund raiser with a Garden Tea Party to help with the financies to send abused and neglected children to summer camp for a week. It goes without saying we shall have cucumber sanwiches and scones, and though we can't get clotted cream, I have a recipe for fake clotted cream. There should be about 60 ladies present , so I am looking forward to this event and it seems, so are they. Hello old friends.

Alan, since you posted on the guest book, you must be aware that I am trying to reach you. Your E Mail address does not allow my mail to go through to you. I have tried several times and tried to call you to no avail. I will try again at this minute but after that you will have to contact me. There are questions to be answered please. Sister.
