Festival 2008
Well unfortunately Festival week has come to an end but what a great week of events. The parade through the town on Saturday was a credit to Stone and thanks should go out to everybody who took part and made such an effort helping make this years festival bigger than ever.
From our vantage point at the top of town we managed to get great shots of all the floats passing by, We are currently in the process of updating the gallery with all of this years pictures so be sure to check then out over the coming days.
In the meantime here is shot of our Town Mayor Cllr Mark Green with the winners of Sundays Bowls final, Mark and Kristan were great supporters of this years festival as they attended virtually every event.
A true credit to the town.
Stone Festivals Week of activities continued on Wednesday with Strictly Dancing - a "Salasa-Latino Evening" At The Crown Hotel Ballroom and Stitches in Stone a Talk by the Historical Society and The Festival Quiz Night at Langtrys.
Festival members were in antendance at all the events and reports will follow, I personally was present at the Quiz and would like to thank Both Nicky and Nidge and all the bar staff for a great evenings entertainment. Quiz Mistress Nicky in full 70's costume delivered a really challenging set of questions.
The winners with a grand total of 51 out of a possible 55 were The Dumb Bells. Our own festival Team got a well deserved 47 and Our Into Stone team turned in a not to shaby 45.
Thanks again to Langtrys and all the staff for making it a memorable Festival Quiz.
Stone Festival's Annual Steeplechase and Dog Derby took place on Westbridge Park on Monday 2nd June.
98 took part in the Steeplechase, sponsored by Regent Travel - a very good turnout - running a course through the Park, along the Canal Towpath and across Crown Meadow, then through a short stretch of the river before returning to the Park.
The overall winner and best of the Under 16 age group was Patrick Brookes, although he was pushed very hard by a much younger Liam White who was a very creditable second overall. The best Adult male was Vinny Edensor and the winner of the Veteran male category was Glen Davies.
Abi Wise won the Under 16 girls age group and was also the first female past the finish line, Naomi Clancy winning the Adult Female competition and Pam Davies was winner of the Veteran Female group.
The Dog Derby, sponsored by R A Knight & Co (Accountants), had 29 eager hounds. It was won by Snoopy who led his Under 16 human, Hugh Davies, around the course, the best adult male was Paul Ricketts with his dog Frank. In the Female section of the Dog Derby Amy O'Connor was the winner of the Under 16 girls category with her dog Spud and Amie Cope won the Adult section with Indiana.
Stone's Town Mayor, Cllr Mark Green, presented all of the winners in each race with their medals., and all the participants received certificates to confirm that they had taken part.
The course was planned by Stone Master Marathoners, who provided marshals and competitor registration was organised by the Stone Inner Wheel Club.
Stone Festival really gets going
What a great start to the 2008 Stone Festival - the Raft Race, Dog Show and Car Boot Sale attracted over a thousand visitors to Westbridge Park - and a similar number were at Springbank Park in Yarnfield for the Festival Football Tournament.
The Raft Race, the traditional curtain raiser for Festival, splashed off at 10..00 am from the Darlaston Inn - a total of 15 home made rafts started the 2 mile journey to the Park and 14 made it all the way. The winners with a time of 37 minutes was Contraflow (a visiting team from Sandbach). The best local team, the Eccleshall Young Farmers, were second in a time of 43 minutes and last year's winners 'The Abyss' from Tittensor were third in 52 minutes.
The team that took the longest to complete the course were 'The Flying Doctors' who took 2 hours 10 minutes. Race Sponsors Cottage Furniture didn't trouble the timekeepers but really enjoyed their soaking!
Nick Addis, who organized the race, said that there were lots of thrills and spills along the way, but everybody got home safely, if rather wet. You can see a video & interview with John Sayer of the event at the express and star website.
The Football Tournament at Yarnfield involved teams of youngsters competing for the Longton Trophies Cups for the Under 9s, Under 11s and Under 13 age groups. 28 teams took part playing in a champions league format before semi-finals and finals at the end of the day.
The winning Under 9 team was Stafford Rangers (who beat PSV Stone in a thrilling final match). The winning Under 11 team were Marsh Town, who beat Stoke All Stars and at the Under 13 age group, Trentside Youth beat Stafford Rangers in the Finals.
Stown Town Mayor, Cllr Mark Green, and Mrs Kristan Green were at all of the events and presented trophies at the Football Finals. Cllr Green said that Stone Festival was a great community event for the people of Stone.
